New Jersey has specific auto insurance laws that every driver should understand. Staying informed about these regulations can help you make better decisions about your coverage and protect your rights after an accident. If you were injured in an accident that wasn't your fault, you may also want to speak with a New Jersey car accident lawyer to understand your legal options.

Minimum Insurance Requirements

New Jersey requires all drivers to carry minimum liability coverage:

5,000 per person/$30,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $5,000 for property damage.

No-Fault Insurance System

New Jersey operates under a no-fault insurance system, meaning your own insurance covers your injuries regardless of who caused the accident, up to your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) limits.

Tort Options

New Jersey offers two tort options: Limited Tort (lower premiums but restricted lawsuit rights) and Full Tort (higher premiums but unrestricted rights to sue for pain and suffering).

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This optional but highly recommended coverage protects you if you're hit by a driver without adequate insurance.
